[Social Innovation]: Durham Kitchen Connection seeking Duke students to join team

Durham Kitchen Connection is looking for Duke students to join their team!

Durham Kitchen Connection is a student-run culinary training program that prepares Durham youth with significant barriers to employment for job opportunities in the local restaurant industry. By partnering with local businesses and community organizations, we have successfully implemented two iterations of a two week culinary and life skills training program in the past year.

We are hoping to build on these successes and are looking for Duke students with a passion for food, social justice, social entrepreneurship, and youth empowerment to join our executive team in planning for the future. No prior experience is required, anyone is welcome!

Please contact durhamkitchenconnection@gmail.com if you are interested in joining our team.

[Social Innovation]: Global Social Venture Competition *open to grad students as well*

Global Social Venture Competition (open to undergrad AND* grad students)

About GSVC

The Global Social Venture Competition (GSVC) is one of oldest social venture competitions, and has the largest global reach. Founded at UC Berkeley’s Haas School of Business in 1999, GSVC has evolved into a global network of premier business schools, universities, and programs in the Americas, Africa, Asia, and Europe.

How it Works

Teams must include at least one student or recent student alum and will learn how to design business models through the “lean launch” process that emphasizes stakeholder discovery, innovation, and social impact measurement.

Participants receive exposure, mentorship and access to a variety of education opportunities. Top finalists participate in a Global Finals event that convenes successful social entrepreneurs and thought leaders for a weekend event that culminates in the awarding of over $80,000 in prizes. Judges, mentors, and sponsors shape the global social entrepreneurship community and help transform ideas into ventures that address the world’s most pressing challenges.

Deadline: Dec 5th

Do Lunch: Entrepreneurship & Diversity - with American Underground's Adam Klein

Do Lunch with Adam Klein — Women and Minority-Led Innovation and Entrepreneurship

Do you wonder, in a city once home to “Black Wall Street,” how do we foster growth for minority and female entrepreneurs and innovators? Are you interested in broadening the opportunities afforded to innovative thinkers who don’t fit the traditional mold of the ‘typical American businessman?’

Join Adam Klein, chief strategist with the American Underground, who says that because of the lack of diversity in tech startups and investor groups and the social pressures of traditional gender roles “great business ideas aren’t getting the opportunity to come to market.” for lunch to discuss these topics and more.

Lunch will take place in West Duke 107F from 12pm to 1pm. Catered lunch will be available to students who RSVP – space is limited.

WHEN: Tuesday, November 15, from 12pm to 1pm

WHERE: West Duke 107F, East Campus
